  • Die Dos & Don‘ts beim BH-Kauf

Fliegenberg, 17.12.2013 -Yes, we women are demanding. We want the perfect man, the perfect job, the perfect hairstyle and, of course, also the perfect bra. We put special demands especially on the latter. It should give women with small breast beautiful cleavage – a seductive décolletage. Curvy women want good support and a nice shape. And the bra must not pinch or poke either. Is that asking too much? SugarShape, the lingerie label and expert for non-standard sizes, explains what women should pay attention to when purchasing a bra. Learn which pitfalls to avoid on the way to a perfect bra.

Die Größe
For women, too, (the right) size is important... Studies including SugarShape‘s 'Curvy Survey' have shown that approximately 80 percent of women are wearing an incorrect bra size. Often the chosen cup size is much too small. In this case, the edge of the bra may dig into your side, your breasts brim over the top of the cup or the underwire pokes into your breast tissue. The majority of women also wear a band that is too loose. This is a critical mistake since the bra’s functionality is impaired and it can’t serve as support for your breasts. But just how is the correct size determined? It’s simple. Just run a tape measure along the band – directly under your bust. Exhale and pull it taut. The tape should run parallel to the ground. This is how you determine the underbust measurement, which mirrors the length of the extended bra in centimeters. For the bust measurement, use a tape measure placed over the fullest part of your bust – keeping the tape horizontal and without squeezing the breasts. The difference between the underbust and bust measurements determines the cup size. Bra sizes can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, which is why you need to check if the selected bra fits properly – regardless of the size indicated. Most manufacturers indicate their bra sizes as a combination of numbers and letters. Not so SugarShape: Our size directly mirrors the underbust and bust measurements, for example, 75/95.

Der Sitz
For a brassiere to offer a high level of wearing comfort and flatter a curvy figure, it must be chosen in the right size and offer perfect fit. The underwire should lie flat against the chest around the entire outside of the breasts without stabbing the delicate tissue. The center fabric, or gore, too should lie flat against the ribcage thereby separating the breasts. An underwire that lies on sensitive breast tissue can impair one’s health! Tip for putting on a bra: Bend forward, grip the cup with your hand and gently shift the breast away from the armpit and into the cup. The band should run horizontally along the chest and be snug enough so that a fist won’t fit between your back and the band. The bra’s support function can thus be unleashed; tension in the neck and shoulder area, backaches, headaches and even deformations can be prevented. When lifting the arms, the band should neither ride up nor hang loose between the shoulder blades. When buying a bra, ensure that it fits snugly on loosest hook of the tightness setting. That’s because the band will tend to stretch somewhat during the course of its wearing or after several washing cycles. At this point, you can choose to fasten the bra on a tighter hook. A bra should never restrict one’s well-being, however, the body should be given some time to get used to a more snug fit. What many don’t know, by the way, is that the underbust band is responsible for 80 percent of the bra’s support for the breasts. Only 20 percent comes from the straps. The main function of the bra straps is to hold the cups in place. They should thus be adjusted in such a way that they neither cut into the skin nor slip off the shoulder. Expert tip for large busts: Choose bras with a wider underbust band since these offer much better wearing comfort while also giving superior support.
